Cruises for travelers 55 and up. Clear answers. No confusion.
This is the question I get asked first, and it is the right one to ask. What will you actually pay, all in? The short answer is: do not trust one number. A 7 night Viking river cruise is often quoted from about $2,299 to about $7,500 per person, depending on cabin, season, and what is included. A realistic all in 7 night total across lines is often quoted at $5,500 to $8,000 per person. Prices are ranges checked 5 Nov 2026, and they vary by sailing, cabin, and date. When you ask me to check a sailing, I work out your total, not just the headline fare.

When I work out a price for a traveler, three things change it most: which cabin you choose, which month you sail, and whether air is included. A lowest cabin in shoulder season is very different from a Veranda cabin at Christmas or in tulip season. These are the questions I ask you first: cruise only, or with air? Which cabin? Which month?
| Line | Starting price, 7 nights, per person |
|---|---|
| Viking | From about $2,299 |
| Avalon | From about $2,499 |
| AmaWaterways | From about $2,799 |
| Uniworld | From about $3,699 |
These are starting prices, before airfare, lowest cabin, shoulder dates, checked 5 Nov 2026. Planning ranges from other advisors are higher: Viking 7 nights at $4,000 to $7,500. That gap is the point, and it is why I will not quote you a starting price and call it your total. The starting price is not the total price.
I wish I could give you one settled number here, but tip figures conflict, so I will not pretend otherwise. Sources checked 5 Nov 2026 give about 12 euros plus 2 euros, 18 euros, and $20 to $25 per person per day. A safe planning range is about 15 to 20 euros per person per day for Viking in Europe, plus small cash for guides and drivers. Ask me to confirm it on your sailing.
Here is where I have to be careful with you. One source gives a Viking deposit of $500, not refundable, with final payment 90 days before departure. Another source says final payment can be due up to 12 months before sailing, which may reflect a promotion or an air inclusive fare. Do not treat one rule as universal. Ask me to confirm the deposit and final payment date for your sailing, and I will.
If you want the cabin you actually want, this is my advice. Book 12 to 18 months ahead for peak sailings, 9 to 12 months for popular spring and fall sailings, and 6 to 9 months for off peak sailings. River ships carry only about 190 guests, so waiting rarely pays. Late deals exist, but cabin choice goes first, and I would rather help you book early than tell you the cabin you wanted is gone.
Close to all inclusive, not fully. Meals, beer, wine, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, one excursion in every port, WiFi, and port taxes are included. Tips, premium drinks, optional tours, and usually air and transfers cost extra.
Only on promotions, or when booked with Viking. Free air offers are common in early booking promotions. Check the specific sailing.
Plan on a range, not one number. A realistic all in 7 night total across lines is often quoted at $5,500 to $8,000 per person. Your total depends on cabin, month, air, tips, and optional tours, and I will work it out with you for your sailing.
Take the two minute quiz. It points you to one river, one line, and one cabin.
Tell me what you are thinking about, and I will check a sailing for you. No payment here. No account here.
