Cruises for travelers 55 and up. Clear answers. No confusion.
If this is your first river cruise, this is the guide I would start you with. Where should you go first? The short answer is: choose the Rhine for castles, vineyards, and a compact first trip. Choose the Danube for grand capitals and classical culture. Both are right for first time travelers, and I will help you pick the one that fits what you love.

The Rhine is the first river I suggest to most first time travelers, because it is the best single introduction I know. It is compact, with castles, vineyards, and the Rhine Gorge. A typical sailing is 7 to 8 nights, Amsterdam to Basel. You see Kinderdijk, Cologne, the Rhine Gorge, and Strasbourg. April is tulip season, with Keukenhof, and if tulips are your dream, tell me, because that sailing books fast.
The Danube is the one I suggest when a traveler tells me they love big cities. It is grand capitals: Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, and Passau. It is classical culture, with the Wachau Valley in between. A typical sailing is 7 nights, or 14 to 15 nights for the Grand European Tour, Amsterdam to Budapest by way of the Main and Rhine.
| River | Best for | Typical length | First time fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rhine | Castles, wine towns, compact route | 7 to 8 nights | Best single introduction |
| Danube | Grand capitals, classical culture | 7 nights, or 14 to 15 nights | Best for city lovers |
| Seine | France in depth, Paris, Normandy | 7 to 8 nights | Best for France lovers |
| Douro | Portugal, port wine, terraces | 7 to 8 nights | Best as a second cruise |
A quick word on the other rivers, because travelers ask me about them all the time. The Seine is a Paris round trip, with Monets Giverny and the Normandy D Day beaches. The Douro is Portugals River of Gold, Porto to the Spanish border, with port wine quintas and 5 large locks. The Rhone and Saone, and the Moselle and Main, are food and wine rivers, best for a second or third cruise. I would not start there unless France or Portugal is the trip you have always wanted.
Pick the Rhine if: you want castles and a compact first trip.
Pick the Danube if: you want grand capitals and classical culture.
Both are good, truly, and I book both all the time. The Rhine is more compact and is often called the best single introduction. The Danube is better if grand cities matter most to you. Tell me which sounds more like you and I will point you one way or the other.
Most of the first river cruises I book are 7 to 10 days. Short samplers of 3 to 5 days exist, and 14 to 15 day Grand European cruises are for repeat travelers. For a first trip, I usually suggest 7 nights, long enough to fall in love with it, short enough to enjoy every day.
Save them for a second cruise, unless France or Portugal is the trip you have always wanted. The Rhine and Danube are the standard first routes I book, and there is a good reason for that. But if your heart is set on Paris or Porto, tell me, and I will help you do that first instead.
Take the two minute quiz. It points you to one river, one line, and one cabin.
